Prompt #1: Persuade by Narration Convince the reader of your position on your Question at Issue (see pp. 71 – 75 in WLTC regarding how to achieve an “argumentative edge” in your thesis) using Narration as your method of argumentation (see handouts on Canvas for more information). If you choose this prompt, a majority of your essay must rely on presenting a narrative or story (an orderly, logical sequence of events) that supports your thesis and proves your argument. Be sure you choose relevant details and rely on rich, detailed, evocative description that taps into your readers’ senses, ultimately SHOWING your readers why your position on this issue is valid, logical, and reasonable. Make sure you choose a specific circumstance/experience related to your Question at Issue to narrate that actually supports your position/thesis. No outside sources are required with this prompt; However, if you choose to cite from or reference outside sources, please include a Works Cited page AND submit a Copies of Outside Sources document (see the E1 Copies of Outside Sources for details). Prompt #2: Persuade by Rebuttal Develop a 4- to 5-page argumentative essay using REBUTTAL as your method of development in order to persuade your audience(s) of the validity of your position either on an issue related to the subject you wrote about Homelessness – Sacramento Essay. First, be sure to convince the reader of the validity of your position by first choosing a debatable issue related to your subject area. Next, strive to completely understand ALL of your oppositions’ viewpoints, as these will provide the content for you to discuss, engage with, and ultimately use to disprove, weaken, or otherwise show your reader why your position is more viable, reasonable, or logical. Remember, there are two ways to build a rebuttal argument: Counterargument, in which you focus on the strengths of the position you support in an attempt to counter your opposition’s points, and 2) Refutation, in which you demonstrate the shortcomings of the argument you wish to discredit (both are still focused on your opposition’s points/argument). A well-written rebuttal should entail both, not just one or the other. Visit the plethora of handouts available to you in the E1 Module on Canvas for more details. If you choose this prompt, you are required to include a minimum of TWO but no more than FIVE citations from outside sources obtained MAINLY through the Los Rios library catalog/databases (Links to an external site.) and submit a Copies of Outside Sources document (see the E1 Copies of Outside Sources for details).
